Automated Systems
For many large commercial Greenhouses, like Sundrop Farms, manual control of the greenhouses is problematic as there is so much data to collect and actions that need to be taken. Therefore automation plays an incredibly important role in continuously monitoring the conditions inside the greenhouse and taking action to rectify any issues.
In this part of the task you will be using a platform called Arduino to build some autonomous systems for a small scale greenhouse. The aim of these systems is to continuously monitor one factor for which a known threshold is known. |
An example of this would be temperature where the greenhouse can either get too hot, or too cold for plants to grow successfully. In this case a temperature sensor would read the temperature and would turn on a heater if it gets too cold and a fan if it gets too hot therefore keeping the greenhouse within the optimal growing range. Systems you can look at for this task are
- Temperature - Turn fan on when the greenhouse gets too hot
- Soil moisture - Run a water pump when the soil is too dry
- Light - Turn on some lights either when it is too dark, or when someone enters the greenhouse, or when both conditions are met
