Drone Safety and Flight Checks
The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) is responsible for the safety of our skies, and hence they produce the set of rules that all people using drones must follow. As a student looking at drones as part of the curriculum you you fall under the same rules as recreational drone users, a video of these rules is below as is a poster and a presentation looking at how we will apply those rules at the school.
In order to be able to fly the drones you need to have a strong understanding of these requirements. To show this you will need to get a score of at least 12/15 on the test of flight rules below.

This video shows one of the main reasons why drones should not be flown over people. It is an example at the Winter Olympics where a drone filming the downhill racing fell out of the sky and almost hit the competitor.

There is more to flying a drone safely than just following the rules. Like any time you operate a vehicle there a range of checks you need to do before you operate a drone. Therefore a checklist is completed before and after every flight . This checklist can be found in word form below, and also in presentation

Keeping records of flights is a really important part of operating drones. For every flight there is a short log that needs to be filled out recording the pilot, location, date, times, checks and any notes. It is generally the responsibility of the pilot to complete this log. however as you are working in teams of two or more to fly the drone, then the spotter can fill this out.
