In looking at the energy demands for block of land there are two main factors that need to be considered.
By answering those two questions you will have both your energy production and energy consumption and will be able to determine to what extent the property is able to support the energy needs of the family.
- How can you maximise the amount of sustainable energy produced and used?
In answering this question you need to look at the size of the solar system you are installing, and taking the sun into account, how you maximise production potential of those panels so that you minimise or eliminate the use of grid power. - How much power do you expect to be using?
In answering this question you will use the spreadsheet to look at different appliances and how much power they use. By providing an estimate for how many hours per day they will be used and how many they may be on standby, you will be able to determine the amount of power used in a day.
By answering those two questions you will have both your energy production and energy consumption and will be able to determine to what extent the property is able to support the energy needs of the family.
You will be installing real solar panels on the block, ones that should be able to run a small motor that we have for this task. One way we can test the performance of the solar system for the property is to take the housing development outside, orient it correctly and the see if the sun is able to get the motor moving for the property you are developing.
The size of your solar system is going to be determined by the area of the panels, again using the scale of 1:125. By knowing the size of a residential solar panel and its power output we can convert this to what it would be in our scale size and the see how many of those panels would fit in the same area as our small solar panels. You can choose to mount these panels on the roof of your house, or elsewhere in your yard, but should ensure they they are oriented to ensure maximum power production. |
