In the food section of this unit you are trying to see to what extent your block of land can support your food needs on an ongoing basis. It will requires you to look at ideas related to healthy eating and to use this to determine what foods will make up the diet of the family you are designing for. You will need to look at what foods you are realistically able to grow, and which ones are better off being purchased.
The video opposite will give a good introduction to this section of work. |

In looking at the growing of food, there are a range of factors that need to be considered.
|
You will use the spreadsheet to keep track of the types of food being grown. As the housing has already been established at this point you will have an idea of what remaining space you will use for the growing of food, You decide on the plants that will be grown and assign an amount of square metres of growing space to each plant type, from this information you will use a formula to determine how to what extent that will cover the food requirements for that family. Any other food types that you you want to grow, but are not listed, can be researched and added to this spreadsheet.
Once you have determined the foods which will be grown, and their growing requirements, you will need to design the features of the yard that deal with food, In the example opposite we have the garden beds (brown), fruit trees and also the grey shed also has a role in housing chickens.
Like with the housing, these features need to be correctly scaled and can either be fabricated using the 3D printers or laser cutter in order to show what portion of the yard will be put aside for food production. As with the housing this must not just be fabricated, but also installed appropriately on the block of land to ensure that optimal growing conditions are maintained. |
