School Bushfire Readiness Audit
As summer approaches, key to protecting your home in the event of a bushfire is preparing your property. This typically involves removing flammable material that is close to your house. Doing this ensures there is a non-flammable barrier between your property and an approaching fire, by removing flammable material close to the house you are also protecting the property from embers that may get carried by the wind and fall on your property

In this task you will take on the role of a consultant who has come in to provide an assessment of the bushfire risk of the school. You will be required to produce a report that could be provided to our schools workplace health and safety (WHS) committee regarding the school's readiness in the event that a fire, particularly bushfire. This report should take into account many of the same features that are included in preparing your own home for bushfire season and therefore should consider
With this task one report will be produced for the class with individuals or small groups taking responsibility for just one area of the school. The report for each areas should include the following
- Location - Given the location of the school, how likely is a bushfire to have an impact on the school?
- Fuel Loads - What flammable material is present in the school? How much of it is there? Does any of it pose a risk to peoople or property? Does it provide opportunity for the fire to spread or cause more damage?
- Plans - Looking at emergency procedures and evacuation routes and whether they are appropriate.
With this task one report will be produced for the class with individuals or small groups taking responsibility for just one area of the school. The report for each areas should include the following
- identification of the fire hazards in the area, these should be
- What the risk is
- Why it would be considered to be a risk
- mapping it to show the location in the school
- photographing it to show the exact hazard (including drone photography of roofs or gutters where appropriate)
- provide advice for remediation work, or an explanation of why this may not be appropriate or required.
- An overall assessment of the risk a bushfire would pose to our school.
