Engineering Drone Deployment Systems
Using drones to carry and release items has been an area of increasing focus in the last few years. It includes tasks such as
In this task you will design and test a remotely operated payload deployment system for a drone. This is a system to be able to carry an item from the take off point to the target area, and then drop the item safely and without damage. For a harder challenge you may to choose to design a system that spreads items such as fire retardant, or seeds to revegetate after a fire, rather than just dropping something. Due to the remote nature of the deployment we will be using the Arduino ecosystem to design the electronics for this system. We will be combining it with 3d printed and laser cut parts, as well as other items, to complete your design. |
The specifications for the task are as follows
- It must be designed to fit a mavic 3 classic drone and be held securely in place during flight
- the system must avoid all important flight systems such as obstacle avoidance sensors, camera , cooling vents, propellors etc
- It must be able to carry and release an actual item
- The deployment system, and the item it is carrying, must not exceed the maximum payload weight for the drone
- The item must be held in place (free-hanging) for at least 1 minute.
- The item must be released by triggering it remotely from a distance of at least 3 m
