Engineering Bushfire Safety Bunkers
In any bushfire action plan the advice is always to leave early. Changing whether conditions can quickly change the speed or direction of a fire, this can mean that either the fire gets to you quicker than you expect or may block the path you would use to escape the fire.
In some cases people elect to try to stay and defend their property by ensuring they have appropriate firefighting clothing and equipment to be able to try to stop the fire from destroying their property. One major part of the stay and defend strategy is to have a safe place to shelter if the fire becomes too much and overwhelms the property and this is the focus of this task. |

In this task you will research the requirements for bushfire bunkers and design and construct an accurate scale model that could be used to educate others about their design. The specifications of this task are as follows
Mandatory Requirements
Optional Requirements
Mandatory Requirements
- It must use the bushfire bunker requirements for SA as accessible at the button below as a guide.
- It must be an accurate 1:10 or 1:20 scale model of a bunker, it must be designed for a stated number of people
- In order to show people the space the stated number of people must also be scaled appropriately and placed in the bunker
- The bunker must contain all of the same equipment found on or in a normal bushfire bunker e.g. seating, viewports door etc
- You must have a explanation of the bunker, how it is constructed and the features of it. This can be in a written or multimedia format (e.g. video, powerpoint)
Optional Requirements
- The bunker should be made of similar materials, or be made to look visually similar to the materials that would be used.
- Key parts of the bunker should be operational (e.g. doors able to be opened and closed.
- The model is able to be deconstructed (e.g. the top removed) to give a better view of the inside.
- The bunker model should also include the siting considerations for the bunker (e.g. underground, setbacks etc).
