Brainstorming
For many the brainstorming process is not one that people but a lot of time or thought into. However it is one of the most important parts of any project, or in solving any problem. It has a few main purposes
- It allows you to explore the situation being investigated to look for a range of different ways to approach it, with the aim of finding the best one within the constraints you have
- It allows you to identify any potential problems early so that you don't put too much time or resources into it if it won't work.
Let's explore this a bit through an example. Let's say you set your self the problem of "I want to climb the most awesome mountain". If you drove to the mountains and only explore the area around position 1 (shown opposite), you would find a mountain to climb, but because you hadn't explored anywhere else, you would not know if there were more awesome mountains to climb. Whereas if you explore more widely, you would find much bigger and interesting mountains to climb. such as if you went to position 3. The more you explore the area, the more you can be sure you have found the most awesome mountain, or the best solution to your given problem.

However just finding the biggest, most awesome mountain to climb is not the only consideration, as there may be additional constraints on which mountain to climb. You may not have the skill, or the equipment required to climb the tallest mountain, or you may have a time limit on how long you can climb for. Therefore the second highest mountain may be the most appropriate choice. You don't want to put the effort into climbing the highest mountain, if you are going to have to turn back before reaching the top.
In this brainstorming section of the task you will be undertaking two brainstorming activities, you will first brainstorm individually to come up with your own ideas before then joining your ideas with the rest of your group to have a collaborative brainstorming session where you will listen to, and build upon, each others ideas.
