Unit Description
The mining industry is a vital part of our development as it provides the raw materials for most of the world’s other industries. We rely on mining to provide the materials that allow us to make products that allow us to thrive as a species. However the Earth’s mineral resources are a non-renewable resources, and the mining process has a significant negative impact on the planet. Other parts of the universe, such as other planets, moons and asteroids are known to be high in mineral resources, particularly precious metals like gold and platinum, they are also currently known to be void of life.
This unit will examine the feasibility of mining other areas of the universe in meeting the Earth’s mineral resource needs. It will look at the ethics of mining, the physics of launches and will look at the challenges of engineering projects for use in space. This will culminate in a pitch to investors to convince them of the feasibility of this technology.
